WORK is getting under way on the upgrade of the paved areas in front of Warrington’s beautifully-restored Golden Gates.
The £110,000 improvement works, carried out by contractors Dowhigh Ltd started yesterday and are scheduled to take eight weeks to complete.
Yorkstone paving will be installed in the area immediately in front of the gates on Sankey Street, replacing the existing paving, which is showing signs of deterioration.
The works will make the area – from the east to west Town Hall drives – safer and more accessible.
In addition, street lighting in the area will be upgraded to low energy feature lighting which will up light the gates during the hours of darkness, and ensure they are prominent within the town centre landscape.
Warrington Borough Council Leader, Cllr Russ Bowden, said: “Our iconic Golden Gates are shining once more following their restoration, and it’s important that the surrounding area is of an equally high quality.
“These improvements are part of the wider public realm improvements at the front of the Golden Gates and will help make this historic area more attractive and accessible for all.”
A temporary compound is being established on Garven Place for the storage and preparation of materials by the contractor.
