WARRINGTON’S education chief has praised the borough’s youngsters following another year of excellent GCSE results.
Cllr Matt Smith (pictured), the borough council’s cabinet member for children’s services said: “I’d like to congratulate our young people on their fantastic achievements in this year’s GCSEs. It’s more great news for education in Warrington, following last week’s excellent A-levels results. “
Most Warrington schools have shown an increase in the percentage of pupils achieving well in their GCSE performance across eight subjects – known as Attainment 8.
The percentage of students achieving a “strong pass” – Grade 9 to grade 5 – this year in Maths and English stands at 49 per cent – an increase of 2.4 per centfrom last year.
Across the borough, 71.5 per cent of students achieved Grade 4+ – pass – in Maths and English, a 4.3 per cent increase on last year and well above national results from last year.
Now in their third year, the reformed GCSEs in Maths and English are different in structure, content and assessment format and are graded using numbers rather than letters, with 9 being the top grade and 1 being the lowest.
Cllr Smith added: “The improvements we have seen, yet again, in Warrington this year are down to the the hard work of students and the excellent teaching and support from schools staff.
“GCSEs provide the foundation for future success in further education, training and employment, improving career opportunities for our young people. These impressive results show that our schools continue to equip our students with the knowledge and skills they need to reach their full potential.”
