WARRINGTON Town’s next game at Cantilever Park will be their league opener against Morpeth Town after winning their final home friendly of pre-season.

The Yellows came from behind to beat City of Liverpool, managed by FA Cup hero Craig Robinson, 2-1.

The hosts had trailed at the break through an unfortunate Tony McMillan own goal, but turned things around with an own goal of their own and then a well-taken goal by a trialist.

In an uneventful first half, the visitors took the lead on 19 minutes when a free-kick was played in to the box, with both Shaun Beeley and Steve Jennings getting crucial challenges in, before it was cleared as far as Karl Clair, who’s half-volley with the outside of his right came back off the cross bar and in off the keeper’s back.

City of Liverpool, who included former Yellows favourite Jamie McDonald up front, almost added a second before the break, Tom Brown thundering an effort off the near post, after a free-kick again caused problems in the box.

Warrington restored parity within three minutes of the restart, Dylan Vassallo’s fizzing free-kick from the right finding its way in to the net off a defender, with James McCarten lurking.

Having earlier lost David Raven with a knock, the Yellows shuffled their pack midway through the second half, introducing the lively Alex Byrne amongst others, and they controlled the rest of the game.

Byrne almost set up fellow substitute Josh Amis for a goal, the big mans flick through his legs falling just wide, before the two linked up again on 70 minutes to set up the second.

From the left this time, Byrne curled in a delivery that Amis flicked goalwards, and a trialist got another flick to it to take it past Matty Johnson in the City of Liverpool goal.

Warrington’s final pre-season game is away at Runcorn Linnets this Saturday, August 10.

Meanwhile, the club has confirmed that midfielder Russell Benjamin has left to take up a full-time contract with Southport.
