Business in Warrington is going from strength to strength, according to the Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership, which reports that the town has one of the strongest and best performing economies in the country.

At the start of this year, Warrington was named the most productive town in the North of England by the Office of National Statistics. The same data showed that the economy of Cheshire and Warrington grew faster than anywhere else in England. The area’s combined output was reckoned at £30.9bn, 40% higher than the average for the North-West of England, and 21% higher than the average for the whole of the UK.

A global powerhouse

Many major international firms are based in Warrington, with the energy sector particularly well represented. Warrington is a town that specialises in science and technology generally, from engineering and auto manufacturing to software development and energy production. Key employers include Bentley Motors, Vauxhall, Electricity North West, United Utilities, Cavendish Nuclear, HP and Tata Consulting Services, as well as the engineering firm Wood, which was recently awarded a multi-million dollar contract serving Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.

Self-improvement

80% of Warrington’s population is currently economically active – higher than the national average – and workforce productivity levels are among the highest outside London. People in Warrington constantly strive to better themselves and take advantage of opportunities for training and self-improvement. These include online training courses to build confidence and develop vital business skills, particularly useful for the 11% of Warrington’s workforce currently employed in the business admin sector.

Outward facing

Warrington has a diverse and international range of employers with a high level of global exports. Although 22% of the workforce is employed in health, education and the arts, Warrington has more private sector employees for a town of its size than almost anywhere outside the capital. The focus on new technology and logistics solutions means that Warrington has a forward-looking, outward-facing economy geared towards our future needs.

With a well-developed infrastructure and excellent transport connections, Warrington looks likely to continue to attract the best and biggest employers. The town is gaining a reputation as one of the UK’s most promising success stories, and looks set to continue to thrive.
