MP calls for “climate and environment emergency” in Warrington

WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones is calling on the borough council to declare a “climate and environment emergency” in line with more than 70 other authorities across the country.
Such a declaration would commit the council to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and ensure it would work with other bodies and residents to drive down the town’s carbon footprint.
Ms Jones said: “Labour’s Shadow Environment secretary has declared a national climate and environment emergency in Parliament but, sadly, the government refused to do the same.
“Climate change is the biggest issue facing the world and our declaration is a call to action to prevent a dangerous rise in global temperatures by radically transforming our economy.
“A wave of local councils across the country have declared an environment and climate emergency and I would strongly support Warrington doing the same.
“Birchwood Town Council have led the way by making such a declaration at their last meeting and should be congratulated for doing so.”
Cllr David Ellis, of Birchwood Town Council, said: “The International Panel for Climate Change believes we have 10 years to prevent catastrophic impact. By joining other councils in the UK and overseas, we intend to show leadership that will hopefully encourage others to do the same. We can do it. We owe it to our children and grandchildren. We will be putting together a plan to achieve our objectives, and this should include recommendations on simple things that our residents can do to play their part.”

  1. WHAT A LOAD OF HYPOCRITES IN THIS COUNCIL
TALKING OF ENVIRONMENT WHEN THE COUNCILORS DRIVE AROUND IN CARS LIKE JAGUARS
AND DAIMLERS AND AT OUR EXPENSE

  2. are these the same councilors who are selling all our green belt land to developers ? supported by a soon to be ex mp who voted against a democratic vote from her constituents and will no doubt see our nation screwed by the brussels dictators.then when there are no jobs the climate will improve that is apart from the hot air in westminster

  3. Which councillors are these?

We of the Warrington Nature conservation Forum have been shouting about this for ages since we were set up under agenda 21.

The protesters in London yesterday and today have had enough of intransigent MPs and have taken to the streets to express their. Some have been very angry indeed.

The council did sign up for change years ago – it did have a Climate Change Champion and the team under Lynton Green did have success. I was surprised when we were stood down. Nut to be fair with Mr Green he has since them delivered some more initiatives e.g. the Solar Farm.

I was angered when the council withdrew support for the Mersey Forest who have done wonder work in the North West. Ltd National and international conferences about the use of tree to combat climate change. They have spelt out in their Forest Plan a route map to a green canopy green roofs shade in streets from trees that has won them awards and cited as best practice across Europe.

It’s only when people cause issues that MPs wake up and smell the tree pollen and think oh herr is a good issue.

    WHY?

    • Where is the consistency Geoff in WBC’s supposed support of a green agenda, when they “invest to save” in solar farms in other parts of the country yet willingly rip out our local green belt to support their developer buddies’ intentions?
