Free storytelling workshops for beginners

FREE storytelling workshops for beginners are being organised at two Warrington libraries – but hurry places are limited to 10 spaces at each event.

The events are being run by Warrington Livewire and Read Now Write Now, who have been successful in securing funding from Arts Council England, to run a series of free workshops for adults at Warrington and Orford Park libraries, starting next month, March 2019.

Following the workshops there shall be a performance of storytelling by participants on the evening of World Book Night, Tuesday, April 23.

The Hear I Am project is a 7-week adult long storytelling course for beginners. The 1.5 hour weekly sessions will take place during the daytime and will focus on such areas as inspiration, writing, technique, style and how to perform a story in front of an audience.

At the same time as the workshops a blog will be produced for all to see and read about the progress in the workshops leading up to and including the event on World Book Night.

The course is designed for adults beginners of any ability although the organisers are particularly keen to work with older people and those who suffer with mental illness. Bookings will be made on a first come, first served basis.

Hear I Am will be run by author and storyteller Charles Lea, principal of literacy project company Read Now Write Now.

Charles said “We are delighted that we have been successful in obtaining funding from the Arts Council and look forward to running the workshops with adults to inspire their creativity in Warrington.

“We aim to help participants learn the skills to think and write a short story and then how to “storytell” it to an audience of friends and family. We feel that people taking part will achieve a wonderful feeling of pride and fulfilment in taking part in the project. Feedback from our similar course, Write Time, Write Place has been absolutely positive with many not only enjoying the writing aspect but also commenting on how well the course has boosted their health and wellbeing and confidence.”
