Teenager arrested on suspicion of rape

AN 18 year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of rape following a serious sexual assault in Warrington town centre during the early hours of Thursday, December 27.

The 18-year-old man from Widnes was arrested on Friday, December 28, on suspicion of rape following a police appeal involving a CCTV image.

He has since been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

On Thursday 27 December police were called to a report of a 19-year-old woman from the town having been sexually assaulted by an unknown man.

The incident is believed to have occurred in the area between St Austins Lane and Stanley Street at around 3am.

Detective Sergeant Paul Nolan said: “I would like to reassure residents that we believe this to be an isolated incident.”

Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
