Free sports club and community cafe open

A FREE sports club and community cafe has launched at Warrington’s Westy Community Centre offering sports and other activities for families.
The new initiative comes after the success of Westy Boxing Club, which was widely praised for helping to reduce anti-social behaviour in the area.
It is part of a three-way partnership between the LiveWire Active team, the Wolves Foundation and Cheshire Police.
The club, for ages 5-16, provides various sports and activities in the main hall – including indoor football and tennis as well as a homework table, while parents / guardians can relax and chat in the back room over a brew.
There they are able to discuss any relevant issues they might be facing and organisers hope to have professionals present to discuss / signpost individuals that have questions or require support on issues such as giving up smoking and losing weight and becoming more active.
Organisers want the emphasis to be on getting the whole family involved, and for local people to guide the project and activities on offer.
Paul Flannery, LiveWire neighbourhood engagement officer (sport and physical activity) said: “It’s fantastic that we have been able to launch the Westy Sports Club and Community Café after the massive success of Westy Boxing Club. This project offers something for all ages and we know that doing healthy and positive activities will be a benefit to the whole community.”
The club opens every Wednesday from 5-7pm
