THE 50th birthday of Penketh Library is being marked this month with a series of special celebration events.

The popular library, on Honiton Way, first opened its doors on October 24 1968 meaning its golden anniversary is approaching, with staff and members keen to make it a milestone to remember.

As such staff and Friends of Penketh Library have lined up a series of events to help celebrate the anniversary:

  • On Tuesday October 16 there will be a talk given by Bob Roach entitled 700 years Crossing the Mersey from 7.00pm. (Please note this event is fully booked, contact the library to check for any returns)
  • On Monday October 22 there will be a talk by award-winning author Sarah Dunnakey, who wrote The Companion, and the short story The Marzipan Husband, which was broadcast on BBC Radio 4. Sarah also writes and verifies questions for several TV quiz shows including Mastermind, Pointless and University Challenge. 6.30pm-8.00pm
  • On Tuesday October 23 there will be a children’s craft session 3.30pm-4.30pm – Drop-In Spooky Crafts.
  • On Wednesday October 24 there will be birthday cake and tea in the afternoon 2:00pm-4:00pm, in addition to a drop-in craft session for children
  • Also on Wednesday October 24, from 6.30pm-8:00pm there will be a Wenlock Mummy Murder Mystery Whodunnit. A murder has taken place. Hear the testimony of the four suspects plus two experts witnesses, then decide who is the guilty party and why.

Matthew Entwistle, Community Librarian, said: “For the last 50 years the Penketh Community has enjoyed and embraced their local library. Come and celebrate this milestone birthday with a week of great events.

“It’s interesting looking back at how the library has changed. At the time of it opening children could only join the junior library from the age of seven years and they were ‘expected to return their books on time and to keep them clean’. Now they can join on the day they are born!”

Please note, some of the events are chargeable and spaces are limited so pre-booking is required. Contact the library on 01925 723730 for further details.
