POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a distraction theft involving an elderly woman having her purse stolen from her car near Central Station, Warrington, earlier today.

The incident took place approximately 1400 hours today (Monday), when the elderly female was sat in a motor vehicle on Winwick Street – close to Warrington Central Station.

A white male approached her and gestured to the rear of the vehicle.

Thinking there may be a problem, the female joined him at the rear of the motor vehicle. The male then jumped into the driver’s seat, started the engine (but did not take the car) before allegedly stealing her purse from the front passenger seat – this contained cash cards, cash and personal items.

The male is described as a white male in dark clothing but wearing a white collared shirt. He was last seen walking towards Central Station.

Police are appealing for witnesses who saw anything at the time to call 101 quoting IML173864.
