Police appeal for witnesses after car driven at speed towards female officer

POLICE are urging witnesses to come forward after a car was deliberately driven towards a woman police officer at Burtonwood, Warrington. on Friday afternoon, leaving her badly shaken.

The incident took place at approximately 4.15pm on Friday, August 31, when a female officer stopped a black car on Burtonwood Road, near to the junction with Clay Lane, in Warrington.

As the officer approached the vehicle on foot the car drove towards her at speed, causing her to jump out of the way to avoid injury.

Sergeant Sophie McGann said: “This was a despicable attack on a police officer who was simply doing her job, trying to protect the people of Cheshire.

“Thankfully, the officer did not sustain any serious injuries as a result of the incident; however she has been left extremely shaken by her ordeal and is currently receiving support.”

Enquiries are ongoing and as part of the investigation officers are keen to locate a number of motorists who were present at the time of the incident.

A 40-year-old man from Bold has been arrested in relation to the incident; he is currently being held on suspicion of attempted section 18 assault, dangerous driving and failing to stop for police.
