Green reigns supreme at cemeteries

Warrington’s cemeteries are once again flying the green flag for the borough.

Warrington Borough Council is celebrating after again achieving the prestigious Green Flag Award for all five of the sites cemeteries and crematoria sites which it applied for in 2018 – a repeat of 2017.

To mark the latest Green Flag success, Cllr Judith Guthrie, executive board member for environment and public protection, visited employees and friends of the council’s bereavement services to congratulate them on their outstanding achievement.

Cllr Guthrie said: “These awards are testament to the hard work and dedication of our bereavement services team along with the tenacious efforts of our wonderful friends groups and I congratulate them all for this fantastic achievement. For our cemeteries and crematoria sites to hold almost half of the borough’s Green Flag awards deserves to be recognised and everyone involved should feel immensely proud of their achievements.”

The sites in Warrington which have earned a Green Flag are:

  • Fox Covert Cemetery
  • Warrington Cemetery
  • Burtonwood Cemetery
  • Hollinfare Cemetery
  • Walton Lea Crematorium

The Green Flag Award is an international accolade, now into its third decade. It is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities. Community engagement and involvement with a site is also a significant part of the award.
