TWO road traffic collisions on the M6 southbound have caused serious traffic delays and gridlock in and around the Warrington area today.

The latest incident involved a serious collision involving three vehicles at around 1.15pm which closed the southbound carriageway from junction 21 at Woolston to junction 20 at Lymm, which resulted in all lanes being closed while Emergency services, including the air ambulance attended at the scene. One person was taken to hospital following the incident.

Normal traffic conditions are expected between 16:15 and 16:30.

Meanwhile traffic diverting through Warrington is causing congestion on A49 Winwick Road and A57 Manchester Road.

The closure resulted in no access to the M6 southbound from the M62. Diversions were put in place via the M62, M56 and M60.

Police have advised motorists to avoid the area.

Earlier in the day a motorist was arrested following a road traffic collision between junction 19 and 18 on the southbound carriageway of the M6.

As well as heavy traffic on Winwick Road and Manchester Road gridlock has also been reported at Warburton Bridge.
