Great Sankey Fun Day hit by rain

Great Sankey Summer Fun Day was brought to a premature halt due to a torrential downpour which left the organisers no option but to close the event half an hour early.

Decent crowds had gathered at the Tim Parry Recreation Ground to enjoy the annual festival and for most of the day it stayed dry but cloudy.

Each year Great Sankey Parish Council provide a free event that is open to all residents. The event is a safe fun environment for members of the community to come along, have fun and try activities free of charge. It is all about everybody coming together and enjoying a colourful day of music, entertainment, education and most of all fun.

The events varied programme brings together the community by showcasing local talent and providing a platform for local groups and businesses to promote themselves. This year the Parish Council were working together in partnership with Park Road Primary School’s PTA Group.

On offer to entertain the locals were zorbs, laser tag, a climbing wall, giant inflatables, a land train, donkey rides, face painting, carousel archery and much more. All these activities were completely free of charge.

The main stage provided a focal point for the event and showcased local talent in the form of local dance groups, community band, school choirs and others.

At around 3 pm just as the Zumba dancers were beginning on the main stage the heavens opened and it poured down. This did not stop either the performers or the audience members who carried on valiantly despite getting a drenching. Thirty minutes later as the dancing finished the organisers were left with little choice but to close the event as conditions underfoot were becoming a danger.

Yet another magnificent local community event brought to the residents, and long may it continue.
