Rescue operation at Lymm Dam as cygnets trapped in fishing line

A fire and rescue crew from Lymm were called in a bid to rescue a pair of cygnets trapped in fishing line at Lymm Dam, yesterday evening.

The stranded baby swans were spotted by local dog walker Andy McLeish, who alerted the emergency services.

A pair of nesting swans recently hatched five cygnets at the dam and two had become trapped in discarded fishing lines.

A member of the public attempted to wade out but the water was too deep.

Four members of White Watch based at Lymm Fire Station used a special floating board as they mounted a rescue operation.

Sadly it was too late for one of the cygnets which died before they could rescue it – but its sibling was rescued and re-united with its mother.

Andy, who runs Bridgewater Lettings in the village, watched the drama unfold after alerting emergency services.

“Thanks to the actions of White Watch one of the cygnets was rescued – but sadly the other one died,” said Andy.
