Football fans encouraged to unite for World Cup

FOOTBALL fans celebrating the World Cup this summer are being encouraged to unite with local communities from all over the world.

Thousands of people across the county will be supporting their team throughout the tournament which begins on Thursday 14 June until Sunday 15 July and officers will be making sure they support local communities in having a fun and enjoyable time.

There will be an increased police presence across parts of Cheshire including Chester, Crewe and Warrington with officers on hand to ensure people enjoy the celebrations safely and to deter any anti-social or criminal behaviour.

Superintendent Luke McDonnell, overseeing the policing operation for the World Cup, said: “The World Cup is a fantastic tournament and should be a time for the local community to have fun and join in with the celebrations.

“To ensure everyone watches the World Cup safely, communities can expect to see officers out and about across the county making sure people are drinking and behaving responsibly.

There will be an increased policing presence in Chester, Crewe and Warrington, particularly around licensed premises during the evening and into the night to provide further reassurance and protection to communities.”

The operational work to be carried out by officers for the World Cup is part of the force’s county-wide ‘Street Safe’ initiative, which aims to protect communities from anti-social behaviour and public space violence.

Supt McDonnell added: “We know how much fans are looking forward to the World Cup and it is important people know we aren’t here to spoil the fun but to instead ensure the minority don’t ruin it for the majority.”

Anyone who sees any anti-social or suspicious behaviour is asked to report it to an officer or call Cheshire Police on 101.
