Student masterminds new chart single

A WARRINGTON student masterminded a new single which has reached 15 in the Music Week commercial pop club chart.
Dan Johnson is studying commercial music production and marketing and public relations at the Warrington Campus of the University of Chester
Released on the university’s record label, Aspiration, the student track “Trombone” is by Hard T!me, featuring Rosalie
It was the brainchild of third year student Dan, but the whole project has been very much a collaborative effort, with contributions from many students and also members of staff.
The decision was taken to aim the single at the commercial club market, and club promotions experts Eurosolution came on board to support the project. Given the target market, it was vitally important to have a really strong package of remixes to accompany the main version.
Music production programme leader Jim Mason said: “There was only an extremely short window of time between when we knew we were doing the club promotion with the support of Eurosolution and when we had to have the package ready.
“We had to come up with a number of remixes in that time. I was really impressed with how everyone rallied round to support the project. Second year students Ryan Bourne and Alvaro Estrada came up with two brilliant remixes in just a matter of days, we managed to get big-name remixers Dizzy Kids to supply a remix, and I also quickly came up with a remix to complete the package.
“Third year undergraduate student Dave Hayward put together some fantastic artwork at the last minute, and there was a last-minute mastering session that involved input from lots of students, so within a few days we had a really strong club package thanks to everyone working together and the organisational efforts of Aspiration label manager and member of staff Andy Nixon.
“A lot of the credit however should go to Dan Johnson, and co-writers, students Lewis Bunce and Karol Glowacki, for having the production skills and industry awareness to create an original track so ideal for this market, and strong enough connections to recruit singer Rosalie, who has performed on The Voice UK and the BBC’s All Together Now.”
The package got an exceptionally good response from DJs and audiences across the UK, but the greatest achievement so far has been reaching number 15 in Music Week’s Commercial Pop club chart.
Jim Mason explained: “The Music Week club charts are, without any doubt, the UK’s leading club charts. It was great to see our project in the same chart as Ariana Grande, Kylie Minogue, Paloma Faith, David Guetta, Calvin Harris and Craig David, and our Aspiration label name listed alongside labels such as Warner, Parlophone, Syco and Island.”
All the versions of “Trombone” by Hard T!me featuring Rosalie are available to download or stream from all major services – just search ‘Trombone’.
