MP backs campaign opposing redevelopment of Lymm Hotel

WARRINGTON South MP Faisal Rashid is backing a campaign opposing an “unrealistic” redevelopment of the historic Lymm Hotel.

Faisal met with neighbours of the Lymm Hotel to hear first hand their concerns about the proposed demolition of the 62 bed hotel which famously hosted the Brazil World Cup team in 1966, to be replaced with 52 retirement apartments, a 72 bed care home and a 120 place nursery.

The message certainly seemed to have already got through to the council who had received 240 objections from a huge range of neighbours.

The objectors even included Brookside Surgery who had expressed concern about coping with a potential sudden surge in caseload.

The group spokesperson, Alan Williams was able to share with Faisal the encouraging news that the Highways Department report posted on the council website was objecting to the proposal on a number of grounds, most critically inadequate parking.

“Some people may feel that there is a knee-jerk tendency to object to every proposal whatever its nature but that certainly isn’t the case here.” explained Alan

“We would be very sad to lose the hotel but were ready to look positively at the proposal.
“Unfortunately it was totally unrealistic and bore no relation to the needs of the community especially in relation to the nursery. The amount of development they were attempting to cram onto the site would have resulted in a very poor deal for everyone except the developer. Unfortunately it’s all to do with greed and nothing to do with need.”

Faisal has offered to facilitate a meeting between developers and residents if the current proposal is rejected in the hope that next time round the developers will be prepared to engage in some genuine consultation.
