Fire breaks out at Warrington Hospital

UPDATED: EIGHT fire appliances attended a blaze in the roof of an administration block at Warrington Hospital.

The fire broke out earlier on Friday afternoon in the loft space of a two-storey administration block in the Kendrick Wing at the back of the hospital.

Soon after reports of the fire at 13.27, it was confirmed by Cheshire Fire and Rescue service that everyone was accounted for.

Eight fire engines, including three from Greater Manchester, helped to tackle the blaze as well as a hydraulic platform.

It was confirmed at 15.46 that the fire was out, with firefighters damping down and hot spotting and crews working with hospital staff to salvage property from the building.

The Kendrick Wing is home to ophthalmology, breast screen and the cardio-respiratory unit.

The hospital remained operating as normal during the fire as it was isolated to one part of the site, though all Breast screening and eye clinic appointments in the Kendrick Wing on Friday afternoon were cancelled.

A spokesperson for Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust commented: “A fire was reported about 1.30pm today in the roof of Kendrick Wing. All staff and patients safely evacuated, thank you to Cheshire Fire and Rescue and Cheshire Police for their prompt response.

“All appointments in Kendrick Wing; Ophthalmology, Breast Screening, Surgical Appliances and Cardio Respiratory are cancelled and patients will be sent a new appointment.

“The cause of the fire is currently unknown and Kendrick Wing remains sealed off until further notice. Members of the public have been asked not to obstruct the site or attempt to enter from the Guardian Street entrance. All other areas on the site are unaffected.”

  1. Gosh that’s awful and glad to hear that nobody was hurt.
Well done to the wonderful fire service for getting it under control quickly before it could spread. You all do a fantastic job 😀
I wonder if this will be the final nail in the coffin for the large old detached Kendrick Wing though (formerly the old Warrington Workhouse) as there were talks about demolishing it a few years back 🙁 Shame if Kendrick does go with all the history that is associated with it.
It’s beautiful from the more ornate side of the building which most people never see now due to changes of the hospitals on site road layout. Fabulous architecture and detail plus the original entrance on the other side with the lovely original tiled sides showing all the guardians names from when it was first built.
Sorry…I really digressed there from the story about the fire…
