MEMBERS of the Lymm and Thelwall branch of the University of the Third Age will celebrate their first “birthday” at their annual general meeting on Thursday, May 17.
The meeting will be at Thelwall Parish Hall at 10am.
The organisation – popularly known as the U3A – was only launched in April last year but already has more than 200 members.
A charity, it is for people no longer in full-time employment and provides educational, creative, leisure and recreational opportunities locally. Membership is £25 a year.
Lymm and Thelwall U3A meet on the third Thursday of each month at Thelwall Parish Hall when there is a guest speaker delivering a wide range of talks.
Afterwards there is socialising and making new friends over a cup of tea.
There are 16 interest groups, spanning outdoor activities such as canoeing, walking, cycling, music and art appreciation, philosophy, IT, flower arranging and stitch and natter.
There are no tutors. Members learn together, drawing on the pool of talent, knowledge, skills and enthusiasm within our membership.
Guest speaker at the annual meeting will be actor and storyteller Derek Poulson, former head of performing arts at Stoke College, who will talk about about regional accents.
There will also be a performance by the U3A ukulele interest group.
New members are welcome and more details of what is on offer can be found on the website https://u3asites.org.uk/lymm-thelwall/welcome
A spokesperson said: “New interest groups are forming all the time and it is likely you will find something of interest.”
