Controlled explosion on suspicious package at Orford

RESIDENTS were evacuated from their homes at Orford yesterday (Saturday) when a suspected “explosive device” was found outside a property on Cleveland Road.

Local residents were evacuated from their homes to a nearby McDonalds during the early hours while members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended to carry out a controlled explosion on the suspicious package, which according to local reports had been placed under a vehicle.

Cheshire Fire Service also attended at the scene and two properties were taped off while police investigated the crime scene.

Warrington Borough Council instigated a “major incident” operation to assist in the evacuations.

A Cheshire polcie spokesperson said: “At around 12.40am yesterday morning police received reports of a suspicious package near an address in Cleveland Road, Warrington.

Officers attended and the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) team was called in to assist. Residents in neighbouring properties were temporarily evacuated, before the EOD team arrived to remove the package and carry out a controlled detonation nearby.
