Olympic Medallist Beth Tweddle MBE is to open new gymnastics classes at University of Chester’s Warrington Campus tomorrow (Saturday).

A one-time ‘Gym Stars’ taster session will be held at the Warrington Campus gymnasium, for children aged two to seven years.

Classes will continue weekly and will aim to introduce children to the basic fundamental moves of gymnastics while having fun, making new friends and achieving badges, certificates and stickers on the way.

Beth, who has close ties with the University having received an Honorary Doctorate from the University in 2013, will be attending the session to inspire budding gymnasts.

The Warrington Campus of the University is the latest venue to host the Gym Stars programme, which has already been running successfully at venues across the North West for a number of years. Classes will take place in the sports hall on the Campus and will be split into sessions depending on age group:

  • 9am – 10am – Twinkle Stars – (Children aged 2 -3 should begin in this class, pre-school parent and child class)
  • 10:15am – 11:15am – Bright Stars – (Children aged 4 – 5 should begin in this class)
  • 11:30am – 12:30pm – Shooting Stars – (Children aged 6 – 7 should begin in this class)

Beth said: “I’m so proud of the programme we’ve created at Total Gymnastics. We’re not here to find the next Olympian; it’s about making sure all children have the chance to benefit from the sport.

“Gymnastics is a great fundamental sport that children of all ages can use as a foundation for whichever path they choose, whether it’s hockey, football, rugby; the list is endless. Along with core strength and discipline, gymnastics is also an opportunity for kids to have lots of fun and make new friends.”

Hayley Braddock, Fitness Facilities Co-ordinator at the Warrington Campus, added: “It’s great that Beth is furthering her ties with the University of Chester. It’s not the first time that she has visited the Warrington Campus since receiving her honorary degree; she delivered a public lecture here in 2015 and so it will be great to welcome her back!”
