LATCHFORD Albion took the spoils by the narrow margin of 22-20 in an entertaining game at Ashton Bears.
With Ashton occupying the final relegation spot, Albion were aware any slip-up could close the gap between the sides and it was the visitors who struck first when forward Chris Brown barged his way over from close range.
Ashton hit straight back with a converted try, which would be the only time they would lead during the game.
Prop Andy Unsworth marked his return to the team with a try, using his strength to cross by the posts, George Briggs converting. With the half coming to a close Ashton levelled the game with a well worked try and at half time the game was in the balance at 10-10.
The second half mirrored the first with the visitors opening the scoring, this time through centre Joe Oakes scoring an acrobatic try, diving in at the corner to restore Albion’s lead.
Shortly after loose forward Danny Brown dummied his way over, with Briggs’conversion opening up a healthy lead for Latchford. A further Briggs penalty edged them 12 points clear with 15 minutes to play.
Credit to Ashton who never gave in and quickly reduced the defecit with a try, where crucially the conversion was missed. Ashton did score right on the final whistle , however this was merely a consolation as Latchford ran out worthy winners.
This weekend Latchford travel to title contenders Orrell St James before a Warrington cup final date on August 23 when they host local rivals Woolston Rovers
