EMERGENCY services including the police helicopter and a rescue boat were scrambled last night following reports of a person in the River Mersey at Bridge Foot, Warrington.

It was later discovered it was a malicious call and no one had been in the water.

A police spokesperson said: “Hoax and malicious calls can have serious repercussions to others who are in genuine need of assistance.

“We will take positive action against anyone who feels they can misdirect emergency services in anyway.”
