Major road closures until May next year – council warning

MAJOR road closures are set to come into force in Warrington from 8pm on Thursday – some of which stay in place until May next year.

The closures are necessary because of the latest work on Junction 8 of the M62 – and it is expected they will lead to delays and congestion.

Warrington Borough Council has, for some time, been carrying out work on the motorway junction which aims to reduce congestion and increase the junction’s capacity to support future growth in jobs and houses.

From 8pm on Thursday Charon Way will be closed at the junction of the M62 roundabout to carry out the next phase of the scheme.

Westbound traffic (from Gemini heading in the direction of M62 J8) will continue to use Charon Way and then be diverted onto the new Charon Way.

At the junction of the new Charon Way/Burtonwood Road all vehicles will have to turn left down Burtonwood Road. Any vehicles that need to travel towards M62/Burtonwood will follow the diversion signs to the roundabout at Westbrook Way/Whittle Avenue and return back up Burtonwood Road towards the M62. This arrangement will be in place until the scheme is complete towards the end of May next year.

Once the scheme is complete a new traffic signal junction at Charon Way/Burtonwood Road will allow both left and right turns.

Eastbound traffic (from M62 J8 heading in the direction of Gemini) wishing to use Charon Way will not be able to enter Charon Way off the M62 roundabout and will have to travel south on Burtonwood Road for a short distance and turn left into the new Charon Way. This diversion will be in place until early December when Charon Way Eastbound will be re-opened.

A council spokesman said: “While we carry out this phase of the improvement scheme we expect increased traffic congestion and vehicles may want to seek alternatives routes and avoid the area if possible.”
