EMERGENCY services were scrambled following reports of a man swimming in the River Mersey at Sankey Bridges, Warrington, earlier this evening.

Three fire engines, the fire service rescue dingy and the police helicopter and other police vehicles all attended at the scene off Saxon Park.

Reports locally suggested the male person swam across the River Mersey and exited safely but this has not been confirmed by the emergency services.

No other details are known at this stage.
