UPDATE: Road works which have been taking place on the A49 Wilderspool Causeway, between Bridgefoot and Brian Bevan Island have now been completed.
Traffic management has been removed, and all lanes have reopened.
Earlier today contractors started a second day of works between Bridgefoot and Brian Bevan Island, with one lane closed in each direction. As a result this caused long queues on Chester Road, Bridgefoot and Mersey Street and Wilson Patton Street.

Why are they referring to it as having been ‘EMERGENCY ROAD WORKS’?
I went through the said road works today and was a little surprised to see that the ‘EMERGENCY’ was just contractors replacing the old type lights and columns for the newer LED sort.
I wonder why they couldn’t have just replaced them at a more suitable time in the day, say after 6.30pm, so as to to avoid causing mayhem at rush hour……or better still why didn’t they do them on a Sunday !! Muppets !!
But if they did that nobody would know that it had been done and the council could not claim that they were making improvements and show how they are committed to providing a smoother flowing traffic experience for the people of widnes and runcorn.
