LiveWire is introducing a variety of female-only exercise sessions in Latchford, Warrington as part of its This Girl Can programme on Wednesday to celebrate International Women’s Day.
A free ladies-only dance aerobic session will be taking place at Westy Community Centre at 9.45am, where women of all ages and abilities are invited to take part.
There is also something on offer for school children with younger girls being encouraged to take part in a free session at Westy Boxing Club – which will run from 5-7pm at Westy Community Centre.
As part of the international awareness day, LiveWire is also offering a week’s free access to their leisure facilities to all the women signed up for the present This Girl Can project.
LiveWire’s successful This Girl Can programme has been running in the area since January, thanks to funding from the Latchford Big Local.
The project has enabled females to try a whole range of new activities which have allowed them to grow their confidence and take on new challenges.
Louise Shannon, the project’s lead at LiveWire, said: “With women and girls still under-represented in sport and physical activity according to Sport England’s latest figures, it is vital that there are specific projects which recognise the potential barriers they face when it comes to taking part in physical activity.
One of the biggest reported barriers is the lack of confidence to try new activities – and This Girl Can has enabled many women to overcome this.”

One partaker, Jeanette Allen, says the project has been the first step on her health and wellbeing journey. “This Girl Can has helped me find a more energetic me and has given me the opportunity, support and confidence to try activities which I wouldn’t have dared try alone.
“The instructors have been fantastic and really encouraged us to push the boundaries. The programme has also allowed me to make lots of new friends, and has made me realise that ‘this Warrington girl can.’”
