POLICE in Warrington are hunting a conman who stole £1,600 from an elderly woman after asking her to try on a coat he claimed to be buying for his own mother.

Town Centre officers and partners are currently trawling through CCTV footage following the offence which took place on December 13 when the elderly female reported that she had had £1600 removed from her account.

She recalls that in the time before this happened she has been approached by male identifying himself as a French male. He stated that he needed help in choosing a coat for his own elderly mother and if the lady would try a coat on for him so he could see her in it.

Police believe this is when her card was taken – and they suspect that she was “shoulder surfed” earlier in her bank.

Police say the crime is sadly familiar – an elderly victim, her kindness and politness cruelly exploited. The male is described as foreign in appearance, short black hair and approximately 5’5″. He was quite smartly dressed in a long black coat.

Partners in the town centre are currently performing a trawl of all available CCTV cameras.
