LYMM’S “North West in Bloom” team are celebrating at the double after a recent presentation day in Southport.

As well as scooping a silver gilt award for their work around the village they celebrated the unexpected bonus of Ben Selwood being crowned as the North-West’s “Young Bloomer of the Year”.

In a competition and activity that tends to attract and involve more senior members of local communities Ben’s contribution as a twenty-something clearly shone out to the organisers who felt they needed to mark his work with a special award.

Ben was actually the instigator of the “Lymm in Bloom” group four years ago and has seen it grow to involve a committed team of local people.

Cllr Peter Powell who is one of the group members said: “It is fantastic that the team is led by a youngster rather being drawn from the retirement community as so many voluntary activities are and we are thrilled that Ben has received this well deserved recognition.”

The group as a whole received a silver gilt award for their hard work across the village that included important maintenance work and planting at Lymm Dam and sunken garden area as well as a large number of planters and hanging baskets in the village centre.

Judges also visited and were impressed by the work done by Su Williams and her team at Statham Primary lunchtime gardening club.

Su commented: “The children love to get involved in the garden and watching what they have planted develop. We also teach them the value of conserving water and composting. Ben Selwood is a Statham Old Boy and it would be nice to think that the one of today’s youngsters may one day emerge to emulate what Ben has achieved.”

The group always welcomes new members and extra pairs of hands for their regular weekend sessions. Contact Ben on [email protected]
