Angry councillors to fight library closure plan

ANGRY members of Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council have vowed to fight proposals to close Culcheth Library.

They say the loss of the library would have a devastating effect on the village.

Cllr Pete Holmes said: “We are totally opposed to the closure of Culcheth Library.

“This is an extremely important resource for the whole community and its loss would have a devastating effect. Books are still an important part in the education of our children and the exposure of the very young to books through the library’s activities is vital.

“Many people cannot afford a computer or prefer not to use one. Modern progress means that sometimes they have to fill in forms online and the provision by the library and support of its staff is an essential service.”

Cllr Ben Alldred, a maths teacher, said: “The analysis of data produced by LiveWire is deeply flawed.  It shows a drop in use of the service, but does not mention that at the same time the opening hours had been severely curtailed.  We demand to see the usage per hour that the library was open.”

Similar opposition to proposed library closures has come from other parts of the borough, with more than 1,500 people signing an online petition.
