Phil’s Jaguar E-type is driving for cancer awareness

LYMM man Phil Ormesher is to take part in the inaugural Jaguar E-type Round Britain Coastal Drive – to raise awareness of prostrate cancer.
He will take part in the Blackpool-to-Carlise stage of the drive in his 1968 Series 2 Roadster.
Phil is an awareness speaker for Prostate Cancer UK after being diagnosed with the disease in December 2012.
He had been having annual PSA tests – a blood test that can detect the early signs of prostate cancer – for 10 years before they indicated treatment was necessary.
In March 2013, when his PSA level was 4.9 when it should have been less than 4.0, he had treatment. He had no side effects and his PSA level is now 0.5.
He decided to take part in the Drive because most Jaguar owners are elderly men and are consequently at a higher risk of getting prostate cancer, making them an ideal audience for this event.
He said: “The E-type is such an attention grabbing car, described by Enzo Ferrari himself as ‘the most beautiful car ever made’, so a fleet of them is bound to attract maximum publicity for the charity.
“I am sure the Drive will create greater awareness of prostate cancer with an audience that might not currently know much about the disease.”
As a volunteer awareness speaker, Phil has, since April 2014 delivered 167 presentations and been involved with 41 awareness stands.
“As a result, I reckon I’ve had meaningful conversations with 4,536 people. From plush offices to portakabins on a building site and waste disposal depots, I’ve met some great people and hopefully done a little good on the way.”
He will be taking part in the drive with his wife around September 18 and they are hoping for good weather.
“My Jaguar’s elderly heating system might make it challenging if it’s cold,” he said.
