WARRINGTON’S first-ever walking football team have been crowned champions of the second Cheshire Walking Football Cup Festival.
LiveWire WFC managed to fight off strong competition from teams across the North West at the event at the Cheshire FA Headquarters in Northwich.
The team faced Nantwich Barony, Widnes WFC and Wallasey Soccer Dome in the group stages before sailing through the semi-finals with a 5-1 victory over Wirral Vets.
Their success continued into the final which saw LiveWire WFC secure a 2-1 win against Wigan Walkers to be crowned champions.
Walking Football is a slow-paced version of football aimed at those aged 50 plus. It is designed to help people keep active and improve their health and wellbeing.
LiveWire WFC was only set up last November thanks to funding from Active Cheshire. Since then the team has grown to 25 members who practise once a week at Great Sankey Leisure Centre.
Neil Morley, a senior Livewire advisor who runs the sessions, said: “I’m so proud of the team and how far they’ve come in such a short amount of time.
“Walking Football is a great way for over 50s to keep active and have fun. You do not need football experience – the main aim is to enjoy the game and feel great.”
