Culcheth Community Day cancelled

TORRENTIAL rain this morning has forced a last minute decision to cancel Culcheth Community Day – for the second time this year.

Stall holders turned up this morning and attempted to set up stalls but were beaten by the weather and the already boggy ground.

The event normally takes place on Bank Holiday Monday but had to be cancelled earlier this year due to the state of the badly drained village green.

Local businessman Paul Taylor from Taylor Business Park, who was one of the sponsors of the event organised by Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council, said:” It is very disappointing as people had started to turn up to set up but the water was pooling on the ground.

“With the poor weather w e have been having it was very optimistic to think it could go ahead .

“Hopefully it will go ahead at some time in the future – but I think the land drainage issues need to be resolved first.”

Apologising the the late cancellation local parish councillor Sue Bland said the council was looking into the worsening flooding problems on the village green.

But they had been told by Warrington Borough Council that no funds were currently available to deal with the drainage problems while United Utilities have said the local drains can not cope with any more water.

“The fight for one of Warrington’s few village greens must begin. Watch this space,” she added.
