Warrington Walking Day route and road closures

1

WARRINGTON’S annual Walking Day is set to take place next week (Friday July 1) and road closures and routes for the walk have been confirmed by the borough council.

Around 3,000 people will take place in the annual Walk of Witness, which is believed to be the 182nd.

Warrington Walking Day was originally founded by a former Rector of Warrington as a counter-attraction to Newton Races which, he believed, were attracting many townsfolk to gambling and drink.
Newton Races died out years ago – but the great Walk of Christian Witness continues.

The procession will leave Warrington Town Hall lawn at 10.30 am and follow Sankey Street, Arpley Street, Museum Street, St Austin’s Lane, Friars Gate, where it will then turn right into Bridge Street to U-turn near Bridge Foot. It will then return up Bridge Street to Market Gate and Horsemarket Street.
Vehicle access to Warrington town centre will be severely restricted. The inner town centre will effectively be closed to all traffic from 7.30am until approximately 1pm.

Phase 1 7.30am
Closure of Sankey Street between Crosfield Street and Legh Street.
Closure of Winmarleigh Street between Sankey Street and Museum Street.

Phase 2 8am
Closure of remaining streets within the Town Centre apart from those covered under phase 3.

Phase 3 9am
Closure of Dial Street, Buttermarket Street, Academy Street and Academy Way.
Apart from the above town centre closure, there are four procession routes into the town centre. Rolling road closure will be applied to allow for the safe passages of the churches into and out of the town centre before and after the main walk.

Route 1 9am
Closure of Church Street.

Route 2 9am
Closure of the outbound section of Knutsford Road from Grange Avenue, Latchford to Bridge Foot and across Bridge Foot into Bridge Street.

Route 3 9.30am
Closure of Rhodes Street, Orford Lane, Pinners Brow, Tanners Lane, Midland Way, Legh Street and Bath Street.

Route 4 10am
Closure of Sankey Way and Liverpool Road (inbound only).

Access to the town centre will reopen at 1pm.

Anyone expecting a delivery you may wish to re-schedule, as access will not be granted during this time.
•Please be aware the Market multi-storey car park has now closed. Alternative parking is available around the town centre.
•The multi-storey car park at Golden Square will still be accessible all day via Midland Way.
•Access will be maintained to both railway stations with diversion routes sign posted. However, please expect delays when travelling into the stations. We apologise for any inconvenience that these closures may cause but they are in place for the safety of all road users.
•Make sure you get your prime seat for Warrington’s popular, historic occasion on 1 July. Tickets are now available for Walking Day at just £1 per person, with all proceeds donated to the Mayor’s charity appeal. Seats, outside the Town Hall gates, are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
•Visit warrington.gov.uk/walkingday or call 01925 443322 to book your ticket.
