Police warn of telephone tax scam

POLICE at Warrington have issued a warning after a resident received a scam phone call purporting to be from HM Revenue and Customs.
The caller told a local woman she had an outstanding tax bill and demanded payment.
HMRC has confirmed they had not made contact with the resident and believe it to be a scam.
A police spokesman said: “If you receive any cold calls and you have any doubts whether it is genuine or not, do not give the caller and personal or bank details and contact the organisation directly to check.
“But please only call the organisations on their published ‘phone number, which can be found online, and not on a number given by the caller.
Anyone who is concerned can call police on 101.
