Pupils thrilled by visit from Gothic fantasy writer

PUPILS at Great Sankey High School, Warrington, were thrilled to receive a visit from fantasy adventure writer Jon Mayhew.

The authour’s writing methods and advise on how to keep the reader captivated were embraced by staff and pupil as he talked about his literary influences, which included Charles Dickens.

He talked about the background to his first two books “Mortlock” and “The Demon Collector.” Both are exciting, dark and gruesomely gothic chillers set in a Victorian setting.

Pupils constructed stories from their own real life events. They were then asked to expand their stories using descriptive writing tips that Jon had given them. They were also given story cubes and random words from which they had to create a short piece of fiction.

This was an interesting challenge to which pupils responded well especially with lots of helpful tips and writer’s secrets from Jon.

Pupils were even more thrilled to be given the opportunity to buy a signed book at the end of the session.

They can’t wait until Jon’s new Monster Odyssey book “The Eye of Neptune” is out in September.
