A YOUNG triathlete from Appleton is set to represent his country next year at an event in Europe.

Daniel Harbidge qualified for the 2017 Triathlon European Championships at a competition in Nottingham last week.

The 22-year-old swam, ran and cycled to secure an automatic qualification place to represent Great Britain in the 20-24 age group at next year’s event in Dusseldorf.

Dan trains with Warrington Triathlon Club and has been supported by the LiveWire Talented Athlete programme. He uses the facilities at Orford Park for training sessions.

He only took up the sport of Triathlon in 2013 after being inspired by the success of the Brownlee brothers at the 2012 London Olympics. He now trains for the event with his Dad.

Dan, said: “I really enjoy the challenge of training for three different sports and combining them on race day.

“Warrington Triathlon Club offers a good variety of coached sessions and is a great way to meet and socialise with like-minded people.

“LiveWire has been really supportive, allowing me to use their excellent facilities to train.

“I really encourage anyone that is interested in triathlon to give it a go. You don’t have to be super fit – start off small with a Go Tri event that are run by LiveWire and build up as you get more confident.

“I’m also hoping that my Dad will also qualify to compete in Dusseldorf in his respective age group.”

  1. This is great news well done Dan, hopefully you in turn will inspire others in Warrington – I’m sure that he will get a big cheer from our Twin Town of Hilden which is very close to the big City of Dusseldorf 🙂
