UPDATED: THE incident on the M56 which result in the carriageways being closed in  both directions near Runcorn has been resolved after a man threatened to jump off a bridge.

There were lengthy tailbacks on both carriageways due to rolling police road blocks between junctions 14-12 (Hapsford-Runcorn) while the incident was being dealt with. Police negotiators eventually talked the man down just before 5pm.

Police say the incident has now been resolved and the carriageway was re-opened once people had returned to their vehicles.

Police aoffered “welfare checks” to motorists who were stranded on the motorway for more than an hour in 80 degrees heat.
