Warrington Town within touching distance of league title

VIDEO: WARRINGTON Town are within touching distance of the league title after grinding out a 2-0 home victory over Brighouse Town.

A first half penalty from skipper Ciaran Kilheeney a minute before the break and a second half effort from striker Steven Gillespie was another to secure three valuable league points.

Town now need just four points from their remaining four games to clinch the league title and secure automatic promotion to the highest level in the club’s history- even if closest rivals Spennymoor manage to get maximum points from their remaining five games.ciaran-kilheeney

Warrington could have been 3-0 up in the opening 15 minutes if it hadn’t been for the heroics of Brighouse keeper Hagreen, who denied Beattie scoring with a header on five minutes with a finger tip save, a powerful shot from Metcalfe on 11 minutes and then Kilheeney.

Brighouse came close to scoring on 31 minutes when an acrobatic overhead kick from Boafo hit the top of the cross bar.

After doing so well to deny Warrington a goal Brighouse keeper Hagreen went from hero to villain a minute before the interval when he brought down Joe Holt in the box as he was running away from goal.

Up stepped Kilheeney to calmly send the keeper the wrong way to score from the spot making it 1-0 at the break.

Chances were few and far between in the second half but Gillespie settled Warrington’s nerves in the 79th minute when he back heeled the ball into the back of the net from a corner which the Brighouse defence failed to clear.

Next up for Warrington is a tough trip to third placed Glossop North End next Saturday, followed by a trip to Radcliffe the following Tuesday.

Warrington’s final home game of the season is against Prescot Cables on Saturday, April 16th, which has been made all ticket.

Tickets are on sale at the club all day Monday from 8am-8pm and on the Tuesday from 5pm-8pm.

Town: Wills, Brown, Dean, Ventre, McCarten, O’Donnell, Holt, Beattie, Kilheeney (c), Gillespie, Metcalfe.

Subs Robinson, Turner, Rudge, Gahgan, Lea.
