New road signs lead to confusion

NEW road signs erected by Warrington Borough Council contractors  have left cyclists and pedestrians confused, sign posting people in the wrong direction.

The confusing road signs have been highlighted by a local cyclist who was travelling around the town over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The cyclist, a former council employee who did not wish to be named, said: “I’ve been out and about on my bike today and came across these new signs.

“It’s a good job I know my way, others were getting well lost.

“The sign on Kingsway Bridge is directing those wanting to go to Howley and Town Centre east instead of west.

“Another sign on Lyons Lane, Appleton, directs people wanting to get to Appleton Thorn back into Stockton Heath.”

A spokesperson for Warrington Borough Council said: “One of the signs – the one directing users to Dudlow Green – is wrongly positioned and we have asked the contractor to rectify this as soon as possible.

“The other has been correctly installed. Although it appears that users are being directed in an eastbound direction, they are being directed down a ramp to an underpass which allows them to pass under Kingsway and continue in a westbound direction towards Howley.

“We are in the process of ‘snagging’ following completion of such work along six routes and any further issues raised by Warrington Worldwide readers will form part of that process.”
