Updated: Golden Square fire was accidental

1

UPDATED: Firefighters were called to deal with an incident at Golden Square Warrington  at the rear of the historic Barley Mow pub  yesterday

The incident took pace at around 3.30pm when two fire engines drove into the Old Fish Market area and used a hose reel to deal with an incident in an alley way between the pub and shops.

The blaze was in a doorway and activated a sprinkler system.  It was at first believed to have been started deliberately but later fire experts decided the cause was a discarded cigarette.

  1. After all the wet weather we’ve had lately what dry material was in the alley that could have caught light from a discarded cigarette butt which would have burned out within a minute or two at the most? Whilst it’s disgraceful and idiotic to drop cigarette butts (lighted or not) it’s also idiotic to leave combustible material lying around. All those responsible for such negligence should be made to pay the costs of the fire service – then incidents like this might not happen so often.
