Planners split on “house in garden” scheme

COUNCILLORS at Warrington were equally split on a controversial plan to build a detached house in the grounds of a cottage.
Members of the borough council’s development management committee voted 5-5 on an application to build the house at Cuerdon Cottage, in Cuerdon Drive, Thelwall.
But officers recommended the scheme be approved – and committee chairman Cllr Tony McCarthy used his casting vote to allow the proposal to go forward.
Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council had opposed the scheme on the grounds it would be a back land development with inadequate access and parking arrangements.
They argued that it was no different to an earlier proposal which had been refused.
A number of nearby residents also lodged objections.
But the scheme – which involves building the house on land currently occupied by a partly constructed garage – can now go ahead.
