Can you swim the “extra mile” to help disabled people?

HOW far would you swim to help fund vital charitable services for disabled people in Warrington?
Whether it’s a few lengths or the full 64-length “Going the Extra Mile” distance or another challenge that feels more achievable for you, Warrington Disability Partnership (WDP) is seeking swimmers to take part in their annual sponsored swim on Saturday, March 12 at the Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub.
Last year, 30 supporters raised £2,000 by swimming a total of 22 miles; the ambition for this yhear is to go further.
Dave Thompson, the charity’s founder and now chief executive, said: “Wouldn’t it be nice if in our 25th anniversary year we could raise £2,500 and collectively swim 25 miles, or more?
“In 2015, Long Lane resident Josh Morris did 22 laps. He was aged nine at the time and has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, so it was a huge personal achievement for him. This year, our disability information officer – Tom Coleridge – and I will be working together to clock up 64 lengths, ‘one mile’.
“That’s the beauty of the ‘Going the Extra Mile’ challenge… It is an opportunity to set a health and wellbeing goal for yourself or as part of a team.
“Every length swam on the day makes a difference, whether it’s one or 64. This is a truly inclusive event for people of all ages and abilities. Join Team WDP in the pool for the swim, volunteer to count laps or sponsor us. There’s so many ways you can make a meaningful and hugely appreciated contribution.”
“Splash for Cash” challengers are kindly asked to register either online at http://www.disabilitypartnership.org.uk/events/swim.shtml or by telephone on 01925 240064. Alternatively, ask for a sponsorship form by email – [email protected]
The swim will start in the pool at 4pm, with registrations on the day from 3.30pm.
Dave added: “Team WDP are proud to be working with LiveWire Warrington again this year.”
