Stolen War memorial flag returned

A FLAG stolen from Warrington Cenotaph has been returned following an appeal online and via social media.

Local soldier’s mum Julie Francis says the Union Jack flag was returned to her at her Lower Walton home yesterday evening by an unknown person.

“I got a knock at my door and this guy just handed me the flag and went. I didn’t know him and before I could ask anything he was gone.

“We did say if it was handed in we wouldn’t take it any further. It looks like all the publicity has worked.
So thank you to everyone who shared it on Facebook – whether he took it down or it was someone else they are still scum for upsetting so many people.”

Julie and former soldier Steve Peacock have been campaigning for improvements to the town’s war memorial on Bridgefoot and recently got permission from Warrington Council to fly a flag at the Cenotaph.

Warrington Borough Council, who have carried out improvements to the Cenotaph recently, had agreed to replace the stolen flag

Steve added: “Glad to hear the good news. I know word was spread around by local people at a pace.
“I could not have believed it, if I had not seen for myself on how local and none local people had come together to get word out by using local groups on Facebook pages and local press and on line publications.

“The person or persons who took the flag in the first place must have had a good look at what happened and decided to feel remorse for their actions. True to my word no action will be taken by my-self but I hope they go away knowing they upset a lot of local people including all our brave soldiers past and present.

“I would like to thank all of you out there who helped by passing the word, to offers of donations – we thank you one and all – God bless you.”
