Another Netto store for Warrington

FOLLOWING on from the successful opening of a store at Lymm, Danish discount store Netto has announced plans for another outlet in Warrington – at the site of the Sportman’s Arms pub in Penketh.

First news of the development was announced on the pub’s Facebook page last night – thanking customers for their support – but with the pub running at a loss in recent years it was no longer viable.

The full statement read: “Please be aware that the Sportsmans Arms was sold in November 2013 to New River Retail as part of an estate purchase of 202 pubs sold by Marstons.

“The Sportsmans Arms was part of this purchase.

“Part of the sale was that Marstons would continue to manage the estate and sell beer to 2017.

“New River Retail have now identified a potential buyer to convert the site for alternative use which is a Netto/ Sainsbury supermarket which are taking on the Aldi/Lidl discount market.

“A new Netto store has been extremely successful in Lymm. The Sportsmans Arms was sold as part of the estate as it is not financially profitable.

“The options put forward by New Rivers is that the Netto option is more sensible and will benefit the Penketh community as currently Widnes or Warrington are the nearest discount stores.

“Planning will be submitted shortly and we will keep you informed of the progress.

“We have had great times at the Sportsmans Arms for the last eight years, some sad, and met some great friends.”

The new look Netto stores represent a complete departure from the format that left the UK market in 2010, with a fresh design based on the latest Netto stores in Denmark. The range of over 2,000 products has been created especially for UK customers to give a new kind of offer to the discount sector. In addition to these products, Netto offers 60 ‘Spot Deals’ – which means that when they’re gone, they’re gone – each week on food and non-food items.

Joanne Hawley, Development Surveyor at Netto UK:“We are delighted to have secured the Sportsman’s Arms site on Warrington Road, Penketh from owners New River Retail Ltd.

“We have seen this as a great opportunity to bring the Netto brand to Penketh and provide the area with access to great quality products and cheap prices.

“Netto is aiming to submit a planning application for the new store proposal in the coming weeks and has started consulting with the Local Community and will continue to do so over the planning application process. We hope this proposal will be well received and would be delighted to hear form our supporters.”
