WARRINGTON lifestyle and leisure group LiveWire has launched its latest scheme to help local athletes get a head start in their sporting careers.
The Talented Athlete Programme offers young athletes a free annual membership to any LiveWire site, regular support during training programmes from a fitness advisor and workshops to develop their knowledge in a range of areas to support their athletic performance.
The scheme, now in its third year, is open to any Warrington resident over the age of 14 who is already competing at a national level in a Sport England recognised sport.
Last year, the programme supported 22 athletes, competing in a range of sports including archery, athletics, boxing, handball, karate and water polo to name a few. They took part in a variety of workshops, delivered by sporting experts and attended events to inspire local peopleto get active.
This year, 30 places are up for grabs with one-to-one support for strength and conditioning programmes as well as advice on nutrition and goal setting also on offer as part of the programme.
James Birdsey,  strategic lead for sports outreach and engagement, said: “LiveWire hope to enhance the large array of sporting talent across the town through the Talented Athlete Programme. For any athlete, being coached and developed from an early age is essential to their success in later life and as we look forward to the Olympics and Paralympics in 2016, we hope we can support more young people to reach their full potential.”
