Fire crews tackle peat fire

FIREFIGHTERS used water from a nearby pond to tackle a peat fire at Houghton Green, Warrington.
One fire engine from Warrington was sent to the scene and crews made sure the fire was extinguished.
Peat – whether wet or dry – can be a major fire hazard and can burn almost indefinitely. It can even burn undetected underground.
But the blaze was put out quickly.
In another incident, two fire engines were sent to Bewsey Road, Warrington and use a hose reel jet to extinguish a blaze in the open at the side of a railway line.
