A FORMER apprentice from Great Sankey has scooped two top honours at the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Apprenticeship Awards.

Liam Sargeant, 20, who works on Redrow’s Stretton Green development, in Stretton, Cheshire, was named England Apprentice of the Year and overall GB Apprentice of the Year at the prestigious ceremony held at Plaisterers Hall, London.

His employer Redrow Homes was also named Great Britain Large Employer of the Year at the event.

Former apprentice Liam is now a trainee site assistant after impressing his bosses with a string of awards.

He said: “I’m honoured to receive this award. Being nominated was great, but to win feels fantastic!

“My apprenticeship has taught me so much and given me a real confidence boost. The opportunity to train while earning a wage makes learning a set of skills a reality and I’d encourage anyone thinking about starting an apprenticeship to give it a go.

“I would like to thank everyone at CITB and at Redrow for all they have done for me.”

Last year Liam won the ‘Apprentice / New Starter of the Year’ title at the esteemed Builder and Engineer Awards.

He has also been named as ‘apprentice of the year’ by Redrow and was also awarded the title of ‘Your Move Apprentice of the Year’,

Karen Jones, HR director for Redrow, said: “We’re very proud of Liam who already, at such a young age, has a host of titles under his belt.

“His latest awards are a huge achievement. He’s a fantastic ambassador for the company, helping us to promote apprenticeships to other young people and show them how hard work is recognised.

“We look forward to seeing his career progress to great heights.”

Redrow has boosted its apprentice intake this year by 60% in a bid to reduce the skills gap.

It has more than 100 bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, electrical and plumbing apprentices, plus 28 office based business administration, commercial and technical apprentices.
