Health warning for homeowners

A LOCAL businessman has issued a health warning about the dangers of unsafe gas appliances, as part of Gas Safety Week 2015.

Paul Clark, owner of Ovenu Warrington, is calling on homeowners to ensure that their gas appliances, including ovens, boilers and gas fires, are in working order to prevent potential fires, gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning.

According to statistics from the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), 23 million households in the UK, Isle of Man and Guernsey use gas for heating, hot water and cooking, with 43% of Britons failing to check their appliances annually and 10% own gas appliances which have never been checked.

Paul Clark, owner of Ovenu Warrington, said: “The figures from the CIH are quite disturbing as your family’s safety and wellbeing should be a top priority.

“Having your gas appliances checked is such a routine procedure, but it is often neglected, which can pose many health and safety risks, including gas leaks, oven fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

“An unclean gas cooker could also pose a health risk, as a build-up of grease and grime from its extended use could potentially cause an oven fire, so the cleanliness and ongoing maintenance of gas appliances is just as big a concern as not having it properly serviced.”

Gas Safety Week (September 14-20) is an annual campaign aimed at educating members of the public about the importance of taking care of their gas appliances.

Paul added: “Gas Safety Week is a fantastic initiative and an ideal opportunity to promote safety in the home and help people realise these dangers, their potential life threatening consequences and the simple measures to combat them.

“I would urge all homeowners to make sure that they check their appliances on a regular basis to alleviate any concerns that come with a faulty gas appliance.”
